Sierra de Montánchez
The central area of the province of Cáceres is occupied by the plains of Trujillo and Cáceres, also know as teh Llanos de of Cáceres.
These plais, criss-corssed by a nubmer of rivers, offer us higly atracctive areas such as that surrouning the River Magasca.
This is a more rural visión of the area cound Trujillo, and offfers fine examples of the impressive granite contrucctions suchs as those to be found in nearby Batolito.
To the south of the plains we find the rugged Montachez hills, which separate the basins of the Tagus and Guadinana Rivers.
This ragen offers us three different types of landscapes: the plains, with its meadows and towns and villages surronded by large fileds that were once used to grow cerals and are now the favourte hábitat of small filed birds who are disturbed only by the bleating of the sheep; the nillsides and torrents where the Mediterranean thicetd is interprsed by olive groves; and hilltops , covered by extensive vineyards and wookds of chestnut tres int he damp areas surronding the source of the Salor.
At the very top we find Montachez famous for its hams, cold meats and wines which compete in quiality with the ceeses of Valdefuentes and teh figs grown in Almoharín.
Famous too for its Arab castle and its unusual carnaval celebration, the “jurramachos” which are celebrated with a general spirit of cheerfulness.
From above, the plains appear to be never-ending… but at the far end we can just about make out the town of Trujillo. In order to reach the town – surrounded by a circle of rocks, you have to accustom the eye to a sight in which the promontory upon which the town is built blends in against its fortresses, towers and barbicans, which clearly stand out against the clear sky, whose colours chagen according to teh position of the sun. |
