Monfragüe
Monfrague Natural Park has an area of 17,852 ha. Its limits coincide with those of the SPAB of the same name.
This protected area extends to both sides of the River Tajo, including an estuary and a valuable branch of the River Tjetar.
With a privileged location, it constitutes the Southern closure of the natural region of Campo Arañuelo, forming its mountains in an arc that unites Las Villuercas and the mountains that surround la Vega del Alagón, acting as a real ecological corridor.
Monfrague Natural Park is situated in the heart of one of the best-conserved areas of Mediterranean foresto n the Southwern península.
The mountain patches serve as refuge for a large population of stags and wild boar which can also be observed in full daylight if they are not hunted.
Mountain hillsides with greater slopes (Corchulas, Santa Catalina) and a large part of the Rivers Tajo and Tietar have dense vegetation, practically unaltered by man. It is posible to reflecto n what must have been the original state of the Mediterranean forest. The shady hilsides show multicoloured bushy vetation of strawberry tres, durllos, labernums and heaters which are intermingled among oaks, cork tres and gall oak.
They are practically impenetrable. The sunny hillsides are less humid and have greater exposure to insulation. They show less dense vegetation dominated by wild olives, lentiscus rockrose brooms and thomboid. |
